FROM THE EDITOR
As the weather turns to spring and summer looms around the corner, many of us yearn for a sense of adventure, whether that involves getting out of the house into the great outdoors or sampling a new type of cuisine. This issue celebrates the spirit of adventure inherent in Nebraskans, transplants to Nebraska, and the state itself.
Adventure is abundantly evident in programs such as Passport Nebraska, which brings people on treks across the state to discover new destinations. Sara Howard and Doug Schroder have visited all 70 stops on the program’s annual itinerary for several years in a row, and they know that many unexpected adventures exist throughout the state. Musical duo (and married couple) Deborah Greenblatt & David Seay travel the globe through their music from an old schoolhouse turned residence in Avoca, Nebraska. Oluwaseye Odanye, who’s come all the way from Nigeria to study at the University of Nebraska Omaha, has embraced his home away from home and is eager to help others in similar circumstances in his role as one of UNO’s Global Ambassadors. An intrepid Maverick, indeed.
Others take adventure to new heights. Take, for example, the three founders of Bravo Zulu Adventure Group. The servicemen saw a need for veterans and first responders to have an outlet, so they established a nonprofit that makes it possible for them to do activities like jump out of planes and experience the adrenaline rush of skydiving. And of course, nothing comes near the adventure that is space, “the final frontier.” Nebraska’s one-and-only astronaut Clayton Anderson shares how he felt looking down on his childhood hometown of Ashland from far above the Earth’s surface. It doesn’t get much more adventurous than going into the yawning infinity of the universe, and he is sharing that adventure with visitors to the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum in his role as the organization’s president and CEO.
Use this issue of Omaha Magazine to inspire your next adventure, whether it be skydiving or fine dining. Adventure is at your fingertips and right around the corner.
