Fun and Fundraising: June 24, 2020 Newsletter

Thursday, June 25: Riding your bicycle can be a great way to exercise. It can also be a great way to relax and sometimes socialize. The Taco Ride-Run to The Ranch is back on Thursday nights. This ride starts at Nebraska Brewing Company in La Vista and will take you to Bellevue Berry Farm, roughly a seven-mile trek. (Though you can head to the farm from any location and still enjoy the tacos.) If this sounds like the perfect way to get back out and interact with the world, click here.

Thursday, June 25: Imagine getting hit by a flood during this time of coronavirus, protests, and general awfulness going on. That is exactly what happened to Héctor Anchondo and his family's home. But you can help, while attending a pretty sweet concert. The Héctor Anchondo Band and Heather Newman Band Fundraiser is happening at Falconwood Park. Anchondo was featured in the November/December 2019 issue of Omaha Magazine here, and you can learn more about this and future events at the park here.

Friday, June 26: As you wished, the Benson Community Garden is bringing you The Princess Bride "drive-in" movie. Limited space is available at this free event, so get there early because social distancing rules will be strictly enforced. This family-friendly event even allows the family dog (no paddling), as long as they are leashed. Learn more about this unique event here, and more about the garden’s commitment to community here.

Saturday, June 27: More good fundraising things are happening this weekend. The Jewell, the jazz club in the Capitol District, is hosting a Livestream Fundraiser for Human Rights, featuring Enjoli Mitchell and other talented local musicians. Special guest host will be activist Morgann Freeman. Funds will go to Urban League of Nebraska, Inclusive Communities, Black Lives Matter, and a Fundraiser for James Scurlock’s Family. They are offering some incentives to fans who donate, including complimentary tickets and VIP passes for upcoming shows. Learn more here.

Sunday, June 28: As part of The Union's Pride Month celebrations, playwright and actor Eric Lawson will join visual artist Tiana Conyers in conversation. Across the Spectrum will be streamed live on The Union’s Facebook page, and moderated by artist and curator Ang Bennett. (You can read more about them here.) Conyers is currently working on the billboard mural project, “We Thrive in Middle Spaces,” featuring LGBTQIA2S+ people of color from Omaha. Lawson has recently written the theatrical musical Frydaddies, which explores the unique personal dynamics of chosen families within queer communities. Read more about them and this event here.

Event times and details may change. Check with venue or event organizer to confirm.
