Amon Amarth was the headline on Steelhouse’s electronic marquee on Friday, May 3. Inside the sleek black building, fans lined up at bars and merchandise tables to collect memories of an unforgettable night. Frozen Soul opened the show, followed by Obituary, providing a head banging warmup. Cannibal Corpse was up next, drawing die-hard fans to the edge of the stage who competed with (and lost to) the lead singer, known as Corpsegrinder, in hair flipping to the drum-heavy beats of death metal.
In between sets, concert-goers could refill their drinks at any of several bars around the venue and get a breath of fresh air on the adjacent outdoor patio. Plenty of floor space allowed for classic mosh pits, as well as more spacious standing room, while those who preferred to sit headed up to the seating areas with a full view of the stage.
Amon Amarth, the melodic death metal band from Sweden, took the stage flanked by giant, glowing-eyed Viking statues and didn’t disappoint with their set. Featuring several props, mind-blowing guitar riffs, deadly hex-kicks on the drums, and deep, powerhouse vocals, the Swedes showed off their musical talent flawlessly (even after taking a break to chug beer from Viking-esque horns), exciting the crowd into a frenzy of obsession for both metal and the Viking lore that riddles the band’s lyrics.
Existing fans were fulfilled and new fans were made at Steelhouse on Friday night for all four bands, making for an amazing night of brutal, awesome music that will live on.
