A Newsletter for the Newly Bored

Thursday, April 23: University of Nebraska-Lincoln interior design professor Mark Hinchman is presenting the lecture Women of the Bauhaus on the history of the Bauhaus with Bemis Center for Contemporary Art. The lecture highlights works by women who were integral to the school, such as Anni Albers, Gunta Stolz, Lilly Reich, and Marianne Brandt. Register through Eventbrite here to participate via Zoom, or tune in to Bemis Center’s Facebook page here at 7 p.m.

Friday, April 24 to Monday, April 27: Looking for a unique way to keep the kids (or just yourself) entertained? Help the folks at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium when you sign up today at inaturalist.org and join the project City Nature Challenge 2020: Omaha Metro. Explore the great outdoors in search of as many plant and animal species as you can find, and record your observations with your phone or mobile device. Note the location of the plant or animal, and share your observations. Upload your findings through the free iNaturalist app on Apple or Android. Find out more here.

Friday, April 24: Join The Union for Contemporary Art and Culxr House for a virtual community concert, Get Out the Count. This virtual show hopes to raise awareness about the importance of participating in the census, which is particularly important for historically undercounted communities such as North Omaha. Participating artists include rapper Corro, Daylonika the Artist (Daylonika Hudson), LakaiyatheLyricst (Lakaiya Johnson), and spoken-word poet Jewel. Learn more here.

Saturday, April 25: Mars Bar and Grill may have closed back in February, but that doesn’t mean they’ve given up on bringing local music acts to the stage. Welcome to Live From Mars House, a streaming service you can access via Twitch.tv. These multi-camera sessions will allow you to interact with the show during the stream. Saturday you can watch Jessica Errett and John Finocchiaro perform from the comfort of your own patio, kitchen, living room, wherever. While you’re encouraged to watch on their Twitch channel here for better quality, or can catch the performance livestreaming on their Facebook page here.

Any Time: If you’ve been looking for a way to help people during this quarantine, SHARE Omaha has several volunteer opportunities. With domestic violence rates rising during this epidemic, the Women’s Center for Advancement is still there to help. Groups and classes have moved to Zoom, and their doors are open for walk-in clients only, but their hotline is still available all day, every day for those who need it at 402-345-7273. You can help by making a monetary donation, or donating a new phone, or just an old one you may have laying around. Find other ways to help people in our community here.

Event times and details may change. Check with venue or event organizer to confirm.
