An interior designer is a con man, a goth girl is toxic, and the evil stepmother is a…life coach? These are some of the many unique aspects of the musical version of the movie Beetlejuice.

The stage production is performing at Orpheum Theater through Feb. 4, and promises to be fun, and funny, for fans of the original Tim Burton movie starring Michael Keaton and Wynona Ryder as well as fans of musical theater who may not know Ryder as anything other than Joyce Byers from Stranger Things.

Audience members will get some true hometown sound throughout the performance from drummer (and Burke High graduate) Tom Jorgensen, who said the show delights him each time he sees it—which is eight times per week.

“There’s a lot of Easter eggs in it,” he said. “It is not a prerequisite to see the movie, because the (musical) is also a standalone show.”

Jorgensen also said the show is a great production overall, with fantastic set designs and lighting. From the standpoint of the music, each character has their own musical style, such as Latin or rock ’n’ roll, meaning audience members should be able to find a song they enjoy no matter their preferences.

In the movie, much like in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, the titular character’s spirit is everywhere while Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice is only onscreen for 17 minutes. In the musical, the main character is the poltergeist.

“People are going to laugh; it’s fun for the whole family,” Jorgensen said.
