“For the first 25 years of my practice we could only offer vein stripping, which was a painful and invasive surgical procedure performed in the hospital under general anesthesia,” explains Dr. Torpy. “About 15 years ago we started doing outpatient procedures under local anesthesia that bring equivalent or better results. People walk out of the office after a procedure and can return to normal activities the same day.”
The newest procedure, Venaseal, involves putting a medical adhesive inside the malfunctioning vein to shut it off. Venaseal is virtually painless, requiring only a bit of anesthetic at the injection site. In addition to treating varicose veins, Totally Vein offers injection sclerotherapy to erase spider veins on the legs and face. About 80 percent of patients are women, mostly ages 40 to 60, but Totally Vein has treated patients from teenagers to people in their 90s.
