TOP SPOT OF THE WEEKEND: Guitarist Alex Brown from local punk/indie/emo band No Getter says one of the biggest reasons everyone should come check out the band’s show at Reverb this weekend is to welcome their new bass player Patrick Newman. “Patrick is so handsome that if you stare into his eyes for long enough, some say it resembles a holy religious experience,” Brown says. “We’re also excited to kick off 2017 and get back to work. Come party with us.” Another reason we picked this show Top Spot of the Weekend: No Getter’s new five-song EP Fitting. The collection reflects “lots of things I think everyone goes through in their 20s—losing a friend, dealing with having no stronghold in life, being around the right people, needing something you can’t seem to get…It’s all pretty relatable just getting through these things we all face together.” Despite all this millennial angst, the band’s music has an uplifting ambience. Openers include Mom Jeans, Sports and Graduating Life. “I’d love to show these bands our scene in Omaha is still thriving and growing.”
Also notable this week: comedian Shane Mauss brings his “A Good Trip” tour (centered around psychedelics) to Slowdown. Before “A Good Trip,” you may want to check out First Friday Old Market where you can ride Ollie the Trolley around to enjoy art and support local business at all of the Old Market’s unique gallery spaces.
End your weekend Sunday at the Waiting Room with the memorable stylings of guitarist extraordinaire Andy McKee, who can magically transform the steel-string guitar into a full orchestra.
And, to kick off the weekend, stop by Brother’s Lounge, 3812 Farnam, TONIGHT, at 6 p.m. to celebrate the relaunch of our sister arts and culture magazine Encounter. Meet the crew, pick up the new mag, and enjoy some complimentary Orsi’s pizza.r
