Wicked, Thursday, April 28 through Sunday, May 15: International Broadway favorite Wicked is in Omaha for a two-week stay, blowing in the witches of Oz to transfix Omaha audiences. Long before the beloved events of The Wizard of Oz, two schoolgirls meet in the fabled land: one popular, beautiful, and ambitious; the other fiery, smart, and misunderstood (and green). Deemed “the best musical of the decade” by Entertainment Weekly, and winner of 35 major awards, this cultural phenomenon isn’t going out of style any time soon. Daphnis et Chloé, Omaha Symphony, Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30: Acclaimed violinist Simone Porter makes her Nebraska debut in this celebration of French repertoire with the Omaha Symphony. Conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya, this evening will feature pieces such as Mendelssohn’s Violin concerto in E minor, Op. 64, and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No. 2. Vocal Point Singers at Mid-America Center, Saturday, April 30: Brigham Young University’s renowned a cappella group are stopping in Council Bluffs this Saturday with their harmony, humor, and remarkable vocal percussion. The group covers a wide range of repertoire and genres, including rock, R&B, hymns, and jazz: all with no instruments but their voices. Arbor Day Weekend, Saturday, April 30 to Sunday, May 1: Tree-lovers can celebrate 150 years of Arbor Day right where it all began, at Nebraska City’s Arbor Day Farm. This weekend-long tree party will include events at all three on-site attractions. At the Tree Adventure, families can explore the tree canopy, create their own themed crafts, experience live performances from Omaha Street Percussion and other local artists, and more. Arbor Lodge Mansion will be open for tours, complete with a special “Women of Arbor Lodge” display in a recently opened area. At Lied Lodge, the Timbers culinary team has crafted a four-course, Arbor Day-inspired menu for a special Farm and Forest Dinner, and Apple House Market will have all kinds of tasty treats and souveniers, from cider to pie, from trees to t-shirts. La Vista Spring Kite Festival, Sunday, May 1: The whole family is invited to this free event for an afternoon of windy wonders. Attendees can see some of the world’s largest and most creative kites, and join the lineup to fly their own. The flying pros will also orchestrate kite candy drops throughout the event, so participants should to have a bag on hand to collect goodies. More information is available here.
