The Durham Offers Free Admission for MLK Jr. Day

Shayna Steele at Holland Music Club, Friday, Jan. 14:  
This Friday, jazz sensation Shayna Steele helps kick off an electrifying new series at Holland Music Club, where patrons get the full dinner-and-a-show treatment. Having performed background vocals for artists such as Rihanna, Bette Midler, and Steely Dan, Steele took a leap into the solo world, starting with features on tracks by Snarky Puppy and Moby. Those interested can get tickets for an evening of jazz with Omaha Performing Arts here.

A Streetcar Named Desire at Chanticleer Theater, Friday, Jan 14 to Sunday, Jan. 16:  
Tennessee Williams’s classic Pulitzer Prize winner, A Streetcar Named Desire, comes to the Chanticleer Theater in Council Bluffs. The cast of talented local performers brings the story of troubled former schoolteacher Blanche Dubois to life and delivers a bit of New Orleans to the Midwest. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $15 for students.Tickets and showtimes, via Pottawattamie Arts, Culture, and Entertainment, are available here. 

Stan & the Chain Gang, Saturday, Jan. 15:   
The Jewell Presents: Omaha-based musical group Stan & the Chain Gang. They will be performing their unique blend of blues, soul, and gospel music, led by frontman Stan Spurgeon, with “Groovin’” Grover Lipkins on guitar, Nate Bray on bass, Andrew Brookins on drums, and Mark Nelson on the keys. Stan & the Chain Gang won the 2021 Nebraska Blues Challenge, and will take the heat to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis later this year. They will rock at the Jewell this Saturday evening with shows at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tickets can be bought here.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day at The Durham, Monday, Jan. 17:  
In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, The Durham is offering free admission and special programming to all visitors on Monday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To honor MLK’s legacy, the museum is curating a community collaborative art project (to which visitors are encouraged to make contributions), screening the famous “I Have a Dream” speech, and hosting a reading of Newspapers & Butter Pecan Ice Cream: Mrs. Mildred Brown and the Omaha Star by the book’s author, Dr. Amy Forss. Readings will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Those interested can register for a free visit on The Durham’s site right here.
