Nebraska has been known for several years as a place to watch volleyball, and Omaha’s new professional team, the Supernovas, has added to the fervor.
On Wednesday, May 15, volleyball fans will have the chance to see their hometown team play in the Pro Volleyball Federation Semifinals, held at CHI Health Center. The first match of the night, at 6 p.m., is between No. 1 seed Atlanta Vibe and No. 4 seed Grand Rapids Rise. The No. 2 seed Omaha Supernovas take the court at 8:30 p.m. against No. 3 seed San Diego Mojo.
Wednesday night’s winners will face off in CHI Health Center Omaha at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, in the first Pro Volleyball Federation Championship.
The Supernovas have set multiple attendance records, with over 12,000 people coming to watch live matches, so those who want to see these hometown heroes pursue this new title should secure playoff tickets today.
Omaha’s winning team includes familiar names Gina Mancuso-Prososki and Natalia Valentín-Anderson. Mancuso-Prososki, an outside hitter, is an area native who played at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln while setter Valentín-Anderson is a trainer at Inspire Greatness Sports Academy.
As part of the first female professional volleyball association, Omaha’s team has helped increased the visibility of the sport. Valentín-Anderson made the SportsCenter Top 10 highlight reel after making two dives against the Vegas Thrill on Monday, May 6, in Las Vegas. The next day, she was named Pro Volleyball Federation Player of the Week.Valentín-Anderson was the fourth Supernovas player to earn the honor this season, the others being outside hitters Bethania de la Cruz and Brooke Nuneviller, and setter Sydney Hilley.
