Swaying to the rhythm, hands in the air or holding one another, fans found themselves within the music of Taking Back Sunday at Harrah’s Stir Concert Cove on Friday. Just across the river from Omaha, fans of all ages and from all over came to see the Grammy Award-nominated band.
Their openers, Citizen, provided an amazingly energetic performance as the lead singer exhorted the pit to mosh and scream, delivering an opening performance that definitely audience members talked about during their ride home. The tone for the night was set perfectly.
The crowd erupted into cheers and screams as soon as Taking Back Sunday came into view.
Formed in 1999, the group brings a uniquely influenced sound to the industry. The group’s music is very genre non-conforming, comprising a blend of each member’s own music taste and ideas. “I don’t care what anybody calls us, so long as they’re listening.” Adam Lazzara, the band’s lead vocalist, stated regarding the band’s hard-to-label sound during a recent interview with Omaha Magazine.
Lazzara said he hopes their music beings fans “a sense of belonging” and “lightens the load” for them.
It was evident that the music did that for the fans as they were in the moment, seemingly forgetting everything going on outside the songs shared between the artists and the crowd.
The tour is in celebration of their newest album, “152,” and fans already knew the words as they played hits form the album.
“We have just been blown away by much of the new record that people already know,” Lazzara commented.
Lazzara also mentioned how every one of their albums is a “snapshot of the people we were at that time,” and the concert Friday night also provided an intimate view of how they connect to they fanbase and gain new fans as they perform live.
Seeing taking Back Sunday live gives audiences a chance to connect to themselves and to the artists that allow them to do so.
