I moved to Omaha in the late 1990s when I was in my 20s, and like many of that age, my husband and I enjoyed going to bars and attending concerts. Those are still favorite activities, but we tend to not stay until bars close these days. A favorite place to visit, as with many 20-somethings now, was the Benson area. The late 1990s were a great time to find music in Omaha, thanks to a burgeoning company called 1% Productions. The owners’ journey from college kids to business moguls is one of our main features this round.
Another feature covers diversity in business. One business positive over the past couple of years has been, that, according to several sources, approximately 380 out of every 100,000 Black adults became new entrepreneurs in 2020, up from 240 in 2019 and 2018. Omaha has some great resources for people of color who want to start a business.
Leanne Prewitt was named president of Ervin & Smith in August 2021. This subject of the third feature has impacted the company with her drive and work ethic. How she started, and where she is headed, can be found in this issue.
One other feature is about KFABs Scott Voorhees, who has been a voice at the station since the early 2000s. In recent years, has taken on more management duties. His predecessor, Gary Sadlemyer, said Voorhees has been an excellent choice. Listeners may not always recognize Voorhees’ changes, but he has taken great strides, and great pride, in
his role.
