Omaha Magazine congratulates philanthropists David and Peggy Sokol (center), who were honored with the Evangeline Booth Award at the 25th annual D.J.’s Hero Awards Luncheon on May 7, 2024. The Evangeline Booth Award was given to the Sokols by Commissioner Kenneth Hodder (left), National Commander of The Salvation Army. Hodder noted that the award has been given to many notable people, such as president George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush. At right are Majs. Jolinda and Scott Shelbourn, leaders of the Western Division (serving Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota).
The Sokols lost their son, D.J., to cancer in 1999. David and Peggy have since put their name, and funds, behind this scholarship program that honors the achievements of Nebraska high school seniors who overcome adversity and show leadership in their communities.
This year’s event included the presentation of $12,000 scholarships to 16 high school seniors and a panel discussion with special alumni guests. More information about the event can be found here: https://centralusa.salvationarmy.org/omaha/news/djs-heroes-celebrates-25-years/
