FROM THE EDITOR: CAUTION: THIS ISSUE MAY CAUSE MOUTH WATERING AND STOMACH GROWLING
Our annual Food Issue is always highly anticipated, and I am honored to be writing the main feature this year. According to the Douglas County Health Department, Omaha has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the United States. Rather than mountains or beaches or sights to see, Omaha boasts amazing food. Therefore, my main task for this issue was a difficult one—coming up with outstanding appetizers in our food-loving city proved to be no easy feat, and there’s only so much room on a page. Still, our list of restaurants in the main feature, though by no means comprehensive, provides an eclectic taste of some of the best bites Omaha has to offer.
Throughout the following pages, you’ll find a feast of food stories to ignite your appetite and plenty of places that will make you say, “Let’s try that for dinner!” all the while fueling your craving for both creativity and community. The Sons and Daughters of Italy weekly pasta dinners provide a perfect example of that craving, merging the love of food and the joy of sharing that food with friends and neighbors. This marriage was even evident in the early 1900s, as Sarah Helen Mahammitt, who studied the culinary arts in Paris, brought back her knowledge of European cooking to African American women in North Omaha.
Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten the wine! Omaha Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Kim Carpenter, sat down with vinNEBRASKA board president Mark Gudgel for a glass or two and his input regarding his expertise, making for a delightful pairing with our other scrumptious stories that fill these pages.
Get ready for tingling taste buds! As you turn this page, we raise a toast to you. Bon appétit!
