July 14-16 Weekend Picks

Jul 12, 2017 12:24PM ● By Tara Spencer
PICK OF THE WEEK— Friday, July 14: Start your weekend off with a free concert at the Bob Kerrey Bridge for a Bridge Beats presentation. You can listen to Omaha’s No. 1 cover band, Secret Weapon, play everything from Tiffany to Guns N Roses, while watching the river float by. Bring your own food if you want, but there will be food trucks and adults can purchase tasty alcoholic beverages provided by Harney Street Tavern. Bring cash, though. No cards on the river. Show starts at 6 p.m. Find out more here.
Friday, July 14: If ’80s music isn’t really your thing, Turner Park has you covered. This week, their Playing with Fire Concert Series is bringing you all the blues you could want. Check out performances by Dawn Tyler Watson from Canada and the Ben Racine Band, not to mention local favorites Domestic Blend and the Us & Them Blues Band. Show starts at 4:30 p.m., so we’re giving you yet another excuse to skip out of work a little early Friday. Get more info here.
Friday, July 14: Babes with balloons, beats, and bass—what more could you ask of a perfect end to a Friday night? Join DJs Ema Marco and Erin Shanley, aka Sharkweek, as they take over 415 and dance your fins off with the Queens of Noise. Plus, when she’s not laying down the beats, Ema will grace your face with a sweet balloon crown. All you have to do is ask. Nicely, please! Show starts at 10 p.m. You can find out more here.
Saturday, July 15: Help Blackstone Meatball celebrate its one-year anniversary this Saturday at the Blackstone Block Party. The celebration takes place on the Harney Street side and starts at 5 p.m. The bands rocking the party will be Funk Trek, AllSortsOfGood, DJs from Almost Music, Tyrone Storm and more. Food will be available both inside and out, but please note this is a 21 and older event. To find out more, click here.
Saturday, July 15: Don’t miss this chance to see Sidewalk Chalk at Love’s Jazz & Arts Center. The Chicago-based jazz and hip-hop group is getting ready to put out their fourth full-length album, An Orchid Is Born, and it promises to be their best yet. Thanks to Love’s Jazz Concert Series 2017, you can get a taste of that musical floetry this weekend. Show starts at 7 p.m. To get your tickets now, go here.
Saturday, July 15: This is your chance to listen to some seriously good music while supporting a seriously good cause. This Saturday, Slowdown brings you Pawchella, a concert fundraiser hosted by Nebraska Vizslas and the Nebraska Humane Society. Proceeds from ticket sales to this all-ages event will go directly to the homeless animals in need at NHS. The 8 p.m. show will feature Bennie and the Gents, Stonebelly, The Superbytes, and Aly Peeler. Get your tickets here.
Sunday, July 16: There’s really nothing more relaxing than going through your vinyasa while you connect with the beauty of nature around you. This Sunday, you can do just that at Fontenelle Forest’s Yoga in the Forest hour-long flow class. Enjoy a meditative walk afterwards, and stick around for some tea and talk after if you can. This free class starts at 9 a.m. Make the most of your Sunday by getting out and enjoying some sunshine. For more details, go here.
Sunday, July 16: Want to bring the weekend full circle with some more river time and even more music? Catch a ride on the River City Star this Sunday evening for a Summer Cruise. You’ll get to listen to music from Sailing in Soup and Domestic Blend, plus a special acoustic set from Devon Fulton. Boarding starts at 5 p.m. and tickets are going fast, so get them here now.
